Fascinating Mt Niesen: the mountain at Lake Thun

Striking Mt Niesen is the mountain shaped like a pyramid that towers majestically over deep-blue Lake Thun and the idyllic town of Spiez. It’s a place that offers a unique combination of nature, culture, and adventure.

Ride the funicular railway up Mt Niesen

The historic Niesenbahn funicular railway takes you from Mülenen to the 2,362-metre summit in just 30 minutes. With a gradient of up to 68%, the ride is an experience in itself and offers breathtaking views of Lake Thun and the surrounding Alps along the way. Once they’ve arrived high up on Mt Niesen, mountain fans can choose between going for a hike or heading straight into the Berghaus hut.

A paradise for children

For younger guests, Mt Niesen is a real mountain adventure land. During the “history ride”, children listen to exciting stories about the Niesen fox and discover the lovingly designed “Niesendörfli” on the summit – a wooden playground with a panoramic view.

One of a kind: the Niesen Stairway Run

With 11,674 steps, the stairway that runs alongside the Niesen funicular railway is the longest in the world. Once a year, brave runners take on the challenge of the Niesen Stairway Run and conquer the 1,669 metres in altitude from the valley station to the summit – a real sporting feat!

At the foot of the pyramid

At the foot of Mt Niesen lies Spiez, nestled between mountainside vineyards and sparkling Lake Thun. This pretty town is also where you’ll find Hotel Seaside, which boasts a stunning view over the water. In the evening, the striking shadow of Mt Niesen moves over Lake Thun, creating an almost perfect triangle on the water. And you? You stroll along the lakeside promenade or sip a refreshing drink, soaking in the spectacular surroundings.
